Lifetime Playgroup Champions
What is a Lifetime Playgroup Champion?
Playgroup Victoria reached its 50-year milestone in 2024. The organisation reflected on the many highlights that half a century brings. Over time it was clear that each playgroup was formed by the people in them.
There are many stalwarts who have been there from the very beginning, valuing the relationships, caring for the participants, nurturing the journey of the parents and the carers at playgroup. We heard the stories of volunteers and facilitators from around the state of Victoria. Many of these playgroup members had seen the generations of children pass through. They had forged deep connections with their community and created a safe, welcoming space for families traversing the early years.
Here we pay homage to our Lifetime Playgroup Champions- those who know that playgroup is knitted into the landscape of Australian culture and for without, we would miss out on the fundamental aspects of human connection- that is to have a village to share with, to gather support and to find a sense of belonging.
Maureen Leahy
Meadows Early Learning Hub Playgroup
“The power of playgroup is in the notion that everyone can be involved and contribute to the group’s wellbeing. From the adults with capacity to help others who offer peer support, or those who share a skill, to the children’s creative opportunities, social development, and enjoyment of discovery in their play together.”
In 2024, Maureen Leahy began her retirement after nearly five decades of working in the early years space. She was sad to leave and still remains connected to her local playgroup community. We celebrate Maureen and all she has given, welcoming each family that walked through the door, extending opportunities for them to grow and thrive with her support.
Larissa Taylor
Larissa’s Imaginarium Project Playgroup, Geelong
“Larissa provides a safe and welcoming space for all families from all backgrounds to gather and feel supported. Children of all ages are drawn to her bright personality and parents feel supported and seen.”- Rheanna Goeschl, Playgroup Attendee
Larissa has been running playgroups for 27 years. Over that time, her superpower has been her understanding and her unique way of creating spaces that promote connection, freedom and learning through play.
